Building Performance and Environmental Design

Bachelor of Science Design and Manufacturing Technologies · Palomar College · 2026-2027 Catalog

The Bachelor of Science in Building Performance and Environmental Design is designed to empower the next generation of professionals with the expertise needed to create environmentally and socially responsible built environments. This program fosters critical thinking, creativity, and a commitment to sustainable practices, as students create climate-responsive building design. Students will consider the client's goals, cost savings, energy efficiency, and human health in the overall consideration of the building. This is a professional pathway that could lead to careers in architecture, environmental engineering, interior design, municipal building official, and general contracting. All projects will utilize building information modeling software (BIM).

Learning Outcome(s):

  1. Create documents to support the profession and business of architecture and design, with the objective of providing value to clients, consultants, employees, and the public through timely and effective professional services in accordance with ethical and legal responsibilities.
  2. Research and observe the process of project procurement and management of design delivery, review, and observation through construction.
  3. Research, analyze, and explore ideas, and alternative solutions that lead to a final design proposal that is cohesive, integrated, adequately described, and coordinated to achieve value objectives, cost objectives, and compliance with planning controls and construction codes.
  4. Analyze and evaluate hands-on learning opportunities, including internships, fieldwork, and real-world projects, to bridge theoretical knowledge with practical applications.
  5. Investigate and evaluate the social and economic aspects of sustainability, emphasizing the importance of community engagement, social equity, and economic viability in the development and management of built environments.
  6. Explore and document strategies for reducing the environmental impact of the built environment, including energy consumption, waste generation, and carbon emissions.
