The Health Science program at Lake Tahoe Community College provides students with a comprehensive foundation in the biological, physical, and social sciences as they relate to human health and healthcare practice. The program is designed to prepare students for entry-level employment in healthcare-related fields and to provide a foundation for transfer to a four-year college or university in Health Science or a related discipline. The curriculum emphasizes human anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, nutrition, and other allied sciences. Students will develop knowledge and skills in areas including human body systems, health promotion and disease prevention, healthcare ethics and law, cultural competence, and professional communication. Instruction integrates scientific reasoning, evidence-based practices, and an understanding of healthcare delivery systems. The Health Science program prepares students for continued study in a broad range of healthcare and allied health careers, including health administration, occupational therapy, environmental health, clinical laboratory sciences, dental hygiene, paramedic, registered nursing, respiratory therapy, physical therapy, and physician assistant programs. The program is designed to provide an interdisciplinary academic foundation while allowing students to flexibly select and sequence courses to meet transfer or career goals. Students who successfully complete the program will acquire the knowledge and skills necessary for employment in healthcare settings and/or for transfer to a four-year institution. Students are strongly encouraged to consult with a counselor to develop an educational plan that aligns with degree requirements, transfer pathways, and career objectives.
