California General Education Transfer Curriculum (CAL-GETC)

Certificate of Achievement California General Education Transfer Curriculum (CAL-GETC) · San Diego Mesa College · 2026-2027 Catalog

Summary

The California General Education Transfer Curriculum (Cal-GETC) Certificate of Achievement is designed for students planning to transfer to a California State University (CSU) or University of California (UC) campus. This certificate provides a comprehensive set of lower-division general education courses required for transfer and is accepted by both CSU and UC systems. Completing the Cal-GETC requirements will satisfy lower-division general education requirements, allowing students to focus on their major upon transfer. Students must complete a minimum of 34 semester units across specified subject areas with a grade of “C” or better in each course. By earning this certificate, students demonstrate their readiness to successfully continue their education at the baccalaureate level.

General Education (GE) is a set of courses from various subject areas that all students must complete to earn a degree, regardless of their major. The purpose of GE is to provide a well-rounded education, developing the knowledge, skills, and attitudes that contribute to becoming an educated person.

While completing GE prior to transfer is not required for admission to most universities, it is generally in a student’s best interest to do so at the community college. Completing GE before transferring can save students time and money by avoiding the need to finish GE requirements at the university level, which often extends the time and expense of obtaining a degree. The Cal-GETC Certificate provides a comprehensive GE pathway, ensuring students satisfy lower-division requirements and allowing them to focus on their major upon transfer.

The student will select courses that fulfill the Cal-GETC certification pattern detailed in the college catalog. Cal-GETC is accepted by all California State University (CSU) campuses and most University of California (UC) campuses and majors. It is also accepted by some private/independent or out-of-state universities.
