BIOL C1001 Introduction to Biology

Units
4
Hours
72 hours total, 4 hours lecture weekly
Advisory
ENG 100 (now ENGL C1000)
Transfers to
CSU, UC

Student Learning Outcomes: Apply the scientific method, including recognizing the elements of experimental design andinterpreting results. Demonstrate scientific literacy by evaluating social, ethical, and equity issues connected tobiological sciences. Describe how living things are made of smaller structures that work together to enable theorganism to survive. Compare how living things depend on each other and the physical environment as theyinteract to obtain, change, and exchange matter and energy. Explain how the diversity of living things is the result of evolution of organisms throughmechanisms such as heredity, random change, and natural selection.

General Education: CalGETC: Transfer General Education Requirements ( 5- Physical and Biological Sciences- 5B: Biological Science )

Course Duration (Weeks): 18

This lecture course provides the non-biology major with an introduction to living things and theirenvironment. Students develop important critical thinking skills as they learn about the process ofscience, the building blocks of life, the role and regulation of DNA, how populations change overtime, the movement of energy within and between life forms, and how species interact with eachother and their surroundings. By the end of the course, students will be able to apply anunderstanding of biological concepts to current issues and their impacts on society. Part 2: BIOLC1001 may be taken concurrently with BIOLC1001L or independently of BIOLC1001L.Not for biology major credit.

Offered: Fall 2026 (2 sections, listed as BIOL-C1001) · Spring 2027 (2 sections, listed as BIOL-C1001)

General Education: CalGETC: Transfer General Education Requirements ( 5- Physical and Biological Sciences- 5C: Laboratory )

Course Duration (Weeks): 18

This laboratory course provides the hands-on application of concepts learned in the Introductionto Biology lecture (BIOL C1001) for the non-biology major. Students use experimentation andinvestigation to develop important critical thinking skills. Students engage in the process ofscience to explore the building blocks of life, the role and regulation of DNA, how populationschange over time, the movement of energy within and between living organisms, and how speciesinteract with each other and their environment. By the end of the course, students will be familiarwith some of the equipment and techniques used by biologists. Part 2: Laboratory and hands-on exposure to the biological sciences, including the scientificmethod, data and measurement, microscopic analysis of cells, osmosis, diffusion, cell division, photosynthesis, cellular respiration, bacteria, protists, plants, fungi, invertebrate animals, andvertebrate animals. BIOL C1001 is either a prerequisite or a co-requisite to BIOLC1001L. Not for Biology major credit.

Offered: Fall 2026 (3 sections, listed as BIOL-C1001L) · Spring 2027 (3 sections, listed as BIOL-C1001L)
