Liberal Arts: Multiple Subjects

A.A. Degree General Education · Gavilan College · 2026-2027 Catalog

The Liberal Studies Major aims to provide a rich liberal art educational experience through selected courses from a wide range of academic disciplines. The broad-based, interdisciplinary nature of Liberal Studies provides a solid well-rounded undergraduate educational experience, integrating knowledge from arts and humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences, with analytical and communication skills well suited for many careers and professions.

This major can prepare students with either a specific or interdisciplinary focus in order to pursue similar majors at four-year institutions. Student should refer to the catalog of their prospective transfer institution and consult a counselor. General Education courses for the degree should be selected carefully to meet the requirements of the intended transfer institution. For further advice, consult the intended university and see the “major-to-major” articulation agreement between Gavilan College and that institution.

Learning Outcome(s):

  1. Student will be able to demonstrate a solid understanding of major contemporary global issues about individuals, society, and nature, by integrating interdisciplinary knowledge of humanities, social science, communication, and natural science. The student will also be able to apply methods of different disciplines to critically thinking about these issues.
  2. Student will be able to prepare for a variety of majors at four year institutions that Gavilan does not offer an Associate degrees for transfer. The flexibility of the degree allows for this preparation and at the same time complete a Gavilan degree.
