Chemistry for UC
A.S. Degree Chemistry · Gavilan College · 2026-2027 Catalog
Chemistry is the study of the properties, composition, and chemical transformations of all material substances. It is often referred to as the "central science" since it draws from mathematics and physics and forms a necessary background to the understanding of earth sciences and all the biological disciplines, including the various medical professions.
This program will enable the students to develop a strong foundation in chemistry, as well as an understanding of physics and mathematics. The chemistry courses offered satisfy general education requirements, allied-health sciences, as well as chemistry, biology, physics and engineering majors.
The Chemistry Program provides students the opportunity to obtain a degree upon successful completion of the requirements of the chemistry transfer major. The theoretical knowledge and laboratory skills acquired will prepare the students interested in a seamless transfer into the UC system, as well as other programs, and enhance their success with entry-level employment that require chemistry courses as prerequisites.
The student that earns this degree has completed lower division preparation in the chemistry major, should be able to graduate within two years attending at full time status, and is guaranteed admission to the UC system with a minimum 3.5 GPA. Similar to the Associate Degrees for Transfer created for the CSU system, guaranteed admission is to the UC system, not an individual campus.
Learning Outcome(s):
- Describe and explain the major General Chemistry concepts including atomic theory, reactions, energy, stoichiometry, nomenclature, solutions, materials, acids & bases, electrochemistry, gases, kinetics, equilibrium, thermodynamics and nuclear chemistry, as well as the scientific method.
- Describe and explain the major Organic Chemistry concepts including structure, bonding and stereochemistry, nomenclature, the physical/chemical properties of all functional groups, how organic chemical reactions occur via mechanistic diagrams and intermediates, the physical/chemical properties of biomolecules, as well as the synthesis of larger target molecules.
- Identify, compare, and contrast all types of General and Organic Chemistry problems and apply math and science concepts to solve them.
- Perform various scientific experiments and interpret/analyze data to check agreement with theoretical predictions, and communicate clearly using written, oral, electronic, and graphical means.
- Perform various laboratory techniques including the use/application of spectroscopy, and utilize the proper protocols and safety practices in the laboratory.
