FRNH 1A Elementary French

French 1A is a multi-skilled beginning level class with an emphasis on understanding and speaking French. Students are introduced to reading, writing, listening, and speaking in the language as well as to the history, cultures, and customs of the Francophone world, including parts of Europe, North America, Africa, Polynesia, and the Caribbean. Students have the option of receiving a letter grade or pass/no pass.

- French 1A, or equivalent. Elementary French 1B is a continuation for students who have completed Elementary French 1A or its equivalent. Students further develop their French skills in reading, writing, listening, and speaking in the language as well as to the history, cultures, and customs of the Francophone world, including parts of Europe, North America, Africa, Polynesia, and the Caribbean. Students have the option of receiving a letter grade or pass/no pass. PREREQUISITE: French 1A, or equivalent. In French 2A, students further develop skills acquired in first year French: they review grammatical structures and expand their vocabulary; they increase their communicative ability through the reading and discussion of excerpts of French literature and cultural texts of various francophone countries and written composition. PREREQUISITE: French 1B or equivalent.

FRNH 23 Independent Study

Designed to afford selected students specialized opportunities for exploring areas at the independent study level. The courses may involve extensive library work, research in the community, or special projects. May be repeated until six units of credit are accrued. This course has the option of a letter grade or pass/no pass. REQUIRED: The study outline prepared by the student and the instructor must be filed with the department and the dean.
