Industrial Electrical Technology

A.S. Degree Industrial Electrical Technology · Chaffey College · 2026-2027 Catalog

Description

The A.S. in Industrial Electrical Technology includes the core curriculum for the Level I, II, and III certificates of achievement, as well as the completion of a General Education pattern of curriculum. Entry-level courses in General Education (arts and humanities, mathematics and natural sciences, and the social sciences) can help you gain a greater understanding of and appreciation for the world and its people. These general education courses will enhance communication skills, improve critical thinking skills and help with a professional career in Industrial Electrical Technology. The Industrial Electrical Technology A.S. curriculum covers electricity, magnetics, fundamentals of control systems, electrical machinery, robotics, programmable logic controllers (PLC), DC and AC variable speed drives, and automation, including modern sophisticated concepts and practical applications. As an Electrical or Maintenance Technician, you will perform a variety of duties that include troubleshooting, programming, working on automation and controls, and analyzing, maintaining and repairing all machinery used in the industries. Common industries requiring these skills are paper, steel, oil and gas, food and beverage, manufacturing, e-commerce, distribution centers, and more. Electricians are usually paid hourly. Job growth is expected to be higher than the average in coming years. Most of this growth will be due to the increasing population and growing economy which leads to more construction and remodeling that involves the work of electricians. In addition, innovations in technology will create higher demand for electricians as buildings need to have electrical systems for computers, industrial facilities are using more automated and robotic equipment, and existing buildings undergo remodeling to incorporate electronic systems for computers.

Program Learning Outcomes

Upon the successful completion of this program, students should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate troubleshooting techniques and skills needed to obtain employment in the field of industrial electricity.
  2. Demonstrate critical thinking and problem solving appropriate within the field of industrial electricity as it relates to light and heavy industry, construction, and utility companies.
  3. Communicate professionally regarding industrial electricity as it relates to programmable logic controllers (PLC).
