Description

The Geological Sciences A.S. degree is designed to prepare students for transfer to a college or university with a goal of earning a bachelor's degree in Geology or a related discipline. Geology is the study of the Earth, its environments, and its history. It is an interdisciplinary science that combines geological observations and concepts with those of biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics. Its goals are to study rocks, minerals, faults, landslides, soils, fossils, energy and water resources, and to understand geologic principles and processes that shape the Earth and its environments, and impact human society. Although the requirements are similar to the Geology Associate in Science for Transfer degree, this degree is specifically aligned with California State University Geology majors that require one semester of calculus (e.g., CSU San Bernardino) with a degree in geology with one semester of calculus.

Program Learning Outcomes

Upon the successful completion of this program, students should be able to:

  1. Distinguish between scientific arguments and those generated by other ways of knowing.
  2. Effectively communicate unifying concepts
  3. Demonstrate the ability to follow current events in the discipline, as reported in the lay media.
  4. Use laboratory equipment and procedures to experience previously unfamiliar aspects of the physical worl
  5. Demonstrate an understanding of essential concepts in geology, including the Earth's origin, the dynamic nature of the Earth, and processes that shape the surface of the Earth, and will use methods for making scientific observations and measurements, describing patterns, interpretations, and conclusions using logical reasoning.
