Description

The Engineering Technology Associate Degree program prepares students for employment in technical fields or to transfer to university engineering technology or engineering programs. By completing the degree or certificate requirements, students acquire a foundation in the principles of engineering, engineering design, computer-aided design, electronics, additive manufacturing processes, traditional manufacturing processes and automation, and the application of math and science in technical fields.

Engineering technology students learn to operate and apply the modern, industry-standard, CAD/CAM software programs most used in today’s workplace. These students also learn about the capabilities and applications of Additive Manufacturing (AM) and 3D Printing Technologies while using them to build their CAD designs. Finally, they learn how things are manufactured. In our CIM (Computer-Integrated Manufacturing) course they experience the entire Design-to-Automated Manufacturing workflow firsthand. This workflow includes the use of CAM software to create CNC programs from their CAD models and setting up and running CNC machines to make their parts.

Careers in engineering technology involve high-level technical work in the creation, manufacture, production, utilization, and distribution of industrial materials, products, and processes. Engineering technicians/technologists serve as members of engineering and production teams and engage in the management, design, production, assembly, quality control, support, sales and marketing activities in their respective fields.

Graduates accept positions with a wide variety of titles including technician, technologist, engineering technologist and engineer. Some examples of these include additive manufacturing/3D printing technicians or engineers, CAD technicians or designers, applications engineers, support engineers, manufacturing technicians or engineers, engineering aides, project engineers, project managers, and sales engineers, within the many disciplines of the research, engineering and manufacturing fields.

Program Learning Outcomes

Upon the successful completion of this program, students should be able to:

  1. Effectively express information regarding engineering technology activities and topics through speaking, writing, producing engineering drawings and diagrams, using digital media and other appropriate modes of communication/expression.
  2. Apply the knowledge, techniques, skills, and modern tools of their disciplines to narrowly defined engineering technology activities
  3. Function competently in a laboratory setting, which includes working effectively in teams, making measurements, operating technical equipment, critically examining experimental results, and properly reporting on experimental results, including their potential for process improvement.
  4. Utilize principles of mathematics and applied science, to perform technical calculations and solve technical problems of the types commonly encountered in engineering technology careers
  5. Demonstrate an understanding of and a commitment to address professional and ethical responsibilities including a respect for diversity.
  6. Engage in self-directed life-long learning, especially concerning maintenance and improvement of technical skills
