College and Academic Writing Success Certificate of Competency

The Student Success with Academic Reading and Writing Emphasis Certificate is designed to support new, current, and returning students by providing tools and strategies to be successful in both traditional and online learning environments and by creating awareness of programs, services, and other student resources available at the college. The program is also designed to help students read, think, organize, and write successfully at the college entry level. This class will assist students in developing academic reading, writing, study, and time management skills that will help them communicate their ideas effectively and respond capably to college-level materials. To Achieve the Certificate of Completion: Upon completion of the following courses with a grade of ‘P’, the student will be awarded a Certificate of Completion.

Program Learning Outcomes

• 1. Upon successful completion of the program the student will be able to successfully navigate both on-campus and online resources.

• 2. Upon successful completion of the program the student will be able to choose and apply essential tools and strategies necessary to support independent learning to reach their goals of certification, graduation, and/or transfer.

• 3. Upon successful completion of the program, the student will be able to comprehend texts by actively reading, taking notes, and recognizing structural elements (e.g. thesis statements, topic sentences, and supporting details).

• 4. Upon successful completion of the program,the student will recognize and employ an understanding of the writing process, including pre-writing, outlining, and paragraph development.
