"description": "In this course, students examine human origins, evolution, and variation with a focus on the adaptations of humans and other primates. Biological evolution and scientific methods are foundations for the course. This course also includes an introduction to the history of evolutionary thought, basic human genetics, and molecular biology, as well as the anatomy, ecology, and behavior of nonhuman primates. It will also cover the evolution of our lineage as reflected in the hominin fossil record, as well as the ethical responsibility to balance scientific inquiry with respect for human subjects, cultural sensitivity, and animal welfare. This course may be offered in a distance education format.",

"description": "This introductory course explores how anthropologists study and compare human culture. Cultural anthropology presents fundamental concepts, data, methods, and theories employed by cultural anthropologists as they seek to understand the full range of human experience. Topics include how people around the world make their living (subsistence patterns), how they organize themselves socially, politically, and economically, how they communicate, how they relate to each other through family and kinship ties, what they believe about the world (belief systems), how they express themselves creatively (expressive culture), how they make distinctions among themselves such as through applying gender, racial, and ethnic identity labels, how they have shaped and have been shaped by social inequalities such as colonialism, and how they navigate culture change and processes of globalization that affect us all. Ethnographic case studies highlight these similarities and differences and introduce students to how anthropologists do their work, employ professional anthropological research ethics, and apply their perspectives and skills to understand humans around the globe. This course may be offered in a distance education format.",

"description": "This course explores the cultural diversity, ways of life, history, and present-day realities of the indigenous peoples of North America – those peoples present on this continent prior to the arrival of Europeans. This course examines Native North American cultures from their initial arrival on the continent through European contact to the present. Centering Indigenous perspectives and drawing on interdisciplinary fields, it explores the diversity of Indigenous nations, challenges persistent stereotypes, and emphasizes that there is no single “Native American” identity. Using ethnographic and Indigenous scholarship, the course highlights the rich cultural diversity of hundreds of nations and examines ongoing struggles for sovereignty and survivance in the context of colonialism. This course may be offered in a distance education format.",
