# Liberal Arts: Mathematics and Sciences (A.S. Degree Major) Santiago Canyon College · 2025-2026 Catalog · Department: Mathematics Source: https://sccollege.elumenapp.com/catalog/catalog/program/liberal-arts-mathematics-and-sciences-as-fall-2023 The integrated curriculum of the Liberal Arts degree provides a broad exposure to the arts, humanities, sciences, and social sciences, while offering the opportunity for depth of knowledge within an area of emphasis. The program will enable students to develop an appreciation and understanding of the logic, aesthetic, and ethical values that have shaped and enriched our culture and to develop intellectual maturity, a deeper understanding of themselves, others, and the world. The curriculum provides a basic framework for lifelong individual study as well as preparation for university study.The science courses in this category examine the physical universe, its life forms and its natural phenomena. These courses will assist the student in developing an appreciation of the scientific method and encourage an understanding of the relationships between science and other human activities. The mathematics courses will encourage the understanding of mathematical concepts through the development of quantitative reasoning skills. Students are required to complete at least one mathematics course within this area of emphasis. This area of emphasis will provide students with lower-division preparation for a variety of majors within the scientific disciplines, including Astronomy, Biology, Chemistry, Earth Sciences, Geology and Physics and will provide preparation for Mathematics majors. Additionally, students may undertake preparation for Nursing, Kinesiology, Public Health and other Health Science majors. Many of the courses will also assist students in prerequisite preparation for graduate programs within Health Sciences.In addition to the area of emphasis, students are required to complete a general education pattern (Plan A, B, or C). Students are advised to meet with a counselor to select the general education pattern most appropriate to their educational goals.Units used to satisfy an area of emphasis may be used to satisfy general education requirements. ### Program Courses & Requirements | Course | Title | Units | | --- | --- | --- | | **Liberal Arts: Mathematics and Sciences, AA** | | 18 | | ANTH 101L | Physical Anthropology Laboratory | 1 | | ANTH 101 | Introduction to Physical Anthropology | 3 | | ASTR 100L | Astronomy Laboratory | 1 | | ASTR 102 | Introduction to Stars and Galaxies | 3 | | ASTR 103 | Introduction to the Solar System | 3 | | ASTR 104 | Introduction to Cosmology | 3 | | BIOL 109 | Fundamentals of Biology | 3 | | BIOL 109H | Honors Fundamentals of Biology | 3 | | BIOL 109HL | Honors Fundamentals of Biology Laboratory | 1 | | BIOL 109L | Fundamentals of Biology Laboratory | 1 | | BIOL 115 | Concepts in Biology for Educators | 4 | | BIOL 139 | Health Microbiology | 4 | | BIOL 149 | Human Anatomy and Physiology | 4 | | BIOL 190 | Introduction to Biotechnology | 3 | | BIOL 190L | Introduction to Biotechnology Lab | 1 | | BIOL 211 | Cellular and Molecular Biology | 5 | | BIOL 221 | Animal Diversity and Evolution | 5 | | BIOL 229 | General Microbiology | 5 | | BIOL 231 | Plant Diversity and Ecology | 5 | | BIOL 239 | General Human Anatomy | 4 | | BIOL 249 | Human Physiology | 4 | | BIOL 259 | Environmental Biology | 4 | | CHEM 100 | Introductory Chemistry | 4 | | CHEM 200A | General Chemistry A | 5 | | CHEM 200AH | Honors General Chemistry A | 5 | | CHEM 200B | General Chemistry B | 5 | | CHEM 280A | Organic Chemistry A | 5 | | CHEM 280B | Organic Chemistry B | 5 | | ENGR 220 | Statics | 3 | | ENGR 225 | Dynamics | 3 | | ENGR 230 | Network Analysis | 5 | | ERTH 100 | Physical Geology | 3 | | ERTH 100L | Physical Geology Laboratory | 1 | | ERTH 111 | Historical Geology | 4 | | ERTH 120 | Earth Sciences | 3 | | ERTH 121 | Earth Sciences for Educators | 4 | | ERTH 130 | Environmental Geology | 3 | | ERTH 160 | Oceanography | 3 | | ERTH 200 | Geology of California | 3 | | GEOG 101 | Introduction to the Natural Environment | 3 | | GEOG 101H | Honors Introduction to the Natural Environment | 3 | | GEOG 101L | Introduction to the Natural Environment Laboratory | 1 | | GEOG 130 | Introduction to Weather and Climate | 3 | | GEOG 130H | Honors Introduction to Weather and Climate | 3 | | MATH 080 | Intermediate Algebra | 5 | | MATH 085 | Intermediate Algebra with Integrated Support | 5.5 | | MATH 086 | Intermediate Algebra for Statistics and Liberal Arts | 4 | | MATH 105 | Mathematics for Liberal Arts Students | 3 | | MATH 140 | College Algebra | 4 | | MATH 150 | Calculus for Biological, Management, and Social Sciences | 5 | | MATH 170 | Pre-Calculus Mathematics | 4 | | MATH 171 | Precalculus and Trigonometry | 5 | | MATH 180 | Single Variable Calculus I | 4 | | MATH 180H | Honors Single Variable Calculus I | 4 | | MATH 185 | Single Variable Calculus II | 4 | | MATH 219 | Statistics and Probability | 4 | | MATH 219H | Honors Statistics and Probability | 4 | | MATH 220 | Statistics and Probability with Integrated Review | 4 | | MATH 225 | Introduction to Data Science | 4 | | MATH 280 | Intermediate Calculus | 4 | | MATH 287 | Introduction to Linear Algebra and Differential Equations | 5 | | MATH 290 | Linear Algebra | 3 | | MATH 295 | Differential Equations | 3 | | PHYS 100 | Conceptual Physics | 4 | | PHYS 150A | Introductory Physics I | 4 | | PHYS 150AC | Introductory Physics I - Calculus | 1 | | PHYS 150B | Introductory Physics II | 4 | | PHYS 150BC | Introductory Physics II - Calculus | 1 | | PHYS 250A | Physics for Scientists and Engineers I | 5 | | PHYS 250B | Physics for Scientists and Engineers II | 5 | | PHYS 250C | Physics for Scientists and Engineers III | 5 | | PSC 100 | Survey of Chemistry and Physics | 4 | | PSYC 200 | Introduction to Biological Psychology | 3 | | WATR 107 | California Water Resources | 3 | ### Learning Outcomes - Analyze and evaluate scientific and mathematical topics. - Clearly communicate scientific and mathematical reasoning and qualitative problem solving skills using appropriate vocabulary, methodologies and diverse technologies.
