It examines Chicana/Chicano literature through novels, short stories, essays, theater, poetry, and nonfiction in relation to their historical, cultural, regional, and gendered contexts. The literature is written by Chicana/Chicano authors and Mexican American writers who seek to define themselves vis-à-vis other Americans. Topics and themes may include the literary performance of identity and culture, intersectionality and racialization, struggle, protest, and artistic activism. Students will survey Chicana/Chicano and Mexican American literature from the Formative (or Pre-classic) period in Mesoamerica to the present.
