# Biology (A.S.-T Degree) Gavilan College · 2026-2027 Catalog · Department: Biological Science Source: https://gavilan.curriqunet.com/catalog/iq/4089/4096/4073 Biology is the study of living organisms using the scientific process. Biologists seek to understand the unity and diversity of life and biological processes. This enables us to make informed decisions about our health, our environment, and our impact on the global ecosystem. Many careers require a solid background in biology, including the allied health professions, agriculture, parks and recreation, and biomedical research. The A.S.-T degree in Biological Science prepares students to transfer to a 4-year university in pursuit of these career paths. This degree emphasizes critical thinking skills, and provides opportunities for students to gain practical experience in biology by working with our faculty and local industry. Recommended preparation for the Program includes: 1. One year of high school chemistry and biology, or Chem 30A and Bio 10 2. Two years of high school math, or Math 233 3. Eligibility for Engl C1000 Associate Degree for Transfer Requirements: (1) Completion of 60 semester units that are eligible for transfer to the California State University, including both of the following: (A) The California General Education Transfer Curriculum (Cal-GETC). (B) A minimum of 18 semester units in a major or area of emphasis, as determined by the community college district. (2) Obtainment of a minimum grade point average of 2.0. Title 5 section 55063(a) also require that students must earn a C or better in all courses required for the major or area of emphasis, or a "P" if the course was taken on a 'pass-no-pass' basis. **Learning Outcome(s):** 1. Use raw experimental data to conduct statistical analysis, and present conclusions in a graphical and narrative form. 2. Find, select and evaluate various types of scientific information including primary research articles, mass media sources and world-wide web information. 3. Effectively communicate scientific concepts in both written and oral formats. 4. Identify the evolutionary processes that lead to adaptation and biological diversity. 5. Describe the relationship between life forms and their environment and ecosystems. 6. Explain the basic structures and fundamental processes of life at molecular, cellular, and organismal levels. 7. Demonstrate the correct operating procedures in the use of common lab equipment such as compound microscopes, spectrophotometer, pH meter, electrophoresis gel apparatus, micropipetters, and centrifuges. | Course | Title | Units | | --- | --- | --- | | BIO 1 | Cell and Molecular Biology | 5 | | BIO 2 | Organismal Biology | 5 | | or BIO 1 | Cell and Molecular Biology | 5 | | BIO 4 | General Zoology | 4 | | BIO 5 | General Botany | 4 | | CHEM 1A | General Chemistry | 5 | | CHEM 1B | General Chemistry | 5 | | MATH 1A | Single-Variable Calculus and Analytic Geometry | 4 | | PHYS 2A | General Physics I | 4 | | PHYS 2B | General Physics II | 4 | | or PHYS 4A | Physics for Scientists and Engineers I | 4 | | PHYS 4B | Physics for Scientists and Engineers II | 4 | | **Total** | | **** |
