# Spanish (Associate of Arts-Transfer) El Camino College · 2026-2027 Catalog · Department: Spanish Source: http://catalog.elcamino.edu/preview_program.php?catoid=13&poid=3663 **Humanities Division** www.elcamino.edu/academics/humanities By completing the degree requirements, the student will acquire proficiency in speaking, reading, writing, and understanding Spanish and will gain knowledge of Spanish and Spanish-American culture. The student will be able to communicate in Spanish, write formal compositions, and read the texts of Spanish and Spanish-American authors, all at the Intermediate-Mid level of competency. Competencies will be assessed throughout the language sequence with written and oral exams. This major provides opportunities for continued advanced learning of Spanish and prepares students to transfer and major in Spanish. The Associate of Arts for Transfer (AA-T) is intended for students who plan to complete a bachelor's degree in a similar major at a CSU campus. Students completing the AA-T are given priority consideration for admission to the CSU system, but not to a particular campus or major. In order to earn an AA-T degree, students must complete: 1. Completion of 60 semester units that are eligible for transfer to the California State University. 2. The California General Education Transfer Curriculum (Cal-GETC) Requirements. 3. A minimum of 18 semester units in a major or area of emphasis, as determined by the community college district. 4. Obtainment of a minimum grade point average of 2.0. 5. A grade of "C" or better in all courses required for the major or area of emphasis. Students who have completed the AA-T will have a strong academic foundation in the field and will be prepared for upper division baccalaureate study at the university. The coursework will satisfy most of the lower-division requirements at many institutions within the California State University system. Students transferring to a UC, private, or out-of-state university should consult with an El Camino College counselor when planning to complete the degree since transfer requirements may be slightly different than those required for the AA-T. ### Required Core: 20 units | Course | Title | Units | | --- | --- | --- | | SPAN 1 | Elementary Spanish I | 5 | | SPAN 2 | Elementary Spanish II | 5 | | SPAN 3 | Intermediate Spanish I | 5 | | or SPAN 52A | Spanish for Native Speakers I | 5 | | SPAN 4 | Intermediate Spanish II | 5 | | or SPAN 52B | Spanish for Native Speakers II | 5 | ### List A: 3-5 units | Course | Title | Units | | --- | --- | --- | | SPAN 5 | Advanced Spanish I | 3 | | SPAN 6 | Advanced Spanish II | 3 | | SPAN 21 | Beginning Conversational Spanish | 2 | | SPAN 22 | Intermediate Conversational Spanish | 2 | ### Course Substitutions: Students may need courses to substitute for units if they begin high in the Spanish sequence.
