# Communication Studies 2.0 (Associate of Arts-Transfer) El Camino College · 2026-2027 Catalog · Department: Communication Studies Source: http://catalog.elcamino.edu/preview_program.php?catoid=13&poid=3755 **Humanities Division** www.elcamino.edu/academics/humanities The degree provides students with a foundation in the theory and practice of communication studies. This is achieved through courses that develop personal, business, and professional communication skills in individual, interpersonal, and group situations, along with research, organization, critical thinking, argumentation, and forensics skills. Students will demonstrate proficiency through performance, class projects, research papers, exams, critiques, and competitions. Students who complete the AA-T will have satisfied the lower-division Cal-GETC requirements at CSU's and UC's, have a strong foundation in the field, and be prepared for upper-division baccalaureate study. Students transferring to private or out-of-state universities should consult a counselor when planning to complete any requirements outside of the AA-T. Completion, student learning outcomes, transferability, forensic competitions, and program review measure program assessment. The Associate of Arts for Transfer (AA-T) is intended for students who plan to complete a bachelor's degree in a similar major at a CSU campus. Students completing the AA-T are given priority consideration for admission to the CSU system, but not to a particular campus or major. In order to earn an AA-T degree, students must complete: 1.Completion of 60 semester units that are eligible for transfer to the California StateUniversity. 2.The California General Education Transfer Curriculum (Cal-GETC) Requirements. 3.A minimum of 18 semester units in a major or area of emphasis, as determined by thecommunity college district. 4.Obtainment of a minimum grade point average of 2.0. 5.A grade of "C" or better in all courses required for the major or area of emphasis. Students who have completed the AA-T will have a strong academic foundation in the field and will be prepared for upper division baccalaureate study at the university. The coursework will satisfy most of the lower-division requirements at many institutions within the California State University system. Students transferring to a UC, private, or out-of-state university should consult with an El Camino College counselor when planning to complete the degree since transfer requirements may be slightly different than those required for the AA-T. ### Required Core: 6 units | Course | Title | Units | | --- | --- | --- | | COMM C1000 | Introduction to Public Speaking | 3 | | or COMM C1000H | Introduction to Public Speaking - Honors | 3 | | COMM C1004 | Interpersonal Communication | 3 | | or COMM C1004H | Interpersonal Communication - Honors | 3 | ### List A: Select 9 units Any course articulated as lower division preparation in the Communication/Communication Studies major at a CSU (3 units) | Course | Title | Units | | --- | --- | --- | | COMS 120 | Critical Thinking Through Argumentation | 3 | | COMS 140 | Small Group Communication | 3 | | COMS 250 | Oral Interpretation of Literature | 3 | | COMS 260 | Introduction to Intercultural Communication | 3 | | COMS 292abcd | Forensics - Individual Events | 2 | | or COMS 293abcd | Forensics - Team Events | 2 | | COMS 265 | Mass Communication | 3 | | or JOUR 12 | Mass Media and Society | 3 | ### List B: Select 3 units Any List A course not already used. | Course | Title | Units | | --- | --- | --- | | ANTH 2 | Introduction to Cultural Anthropology | 3 | | or ANTH 2H | Honors Introduction to Cultural Anthropology | 3 | | ENGL C1001 | Critical Thinking and Writing | 4 | | or ENGL C1001H | Critical Thinking and Writing - Honors | 4 | | or ENGL C1002 | Introduction to Literature | 3 | | or ENGL C1002H | Introduction to Literature - Honors | 3 | | JOUR 1 | News Writing and Reporting | 3 | | PSYC C1000 | Introduction to Psychology | 3 | | or PSYC C1000H | Introduction to Psychology - Honors | 3 | | SOCI 101 | Introduction to Sociology | 3 | | or SOCI 101H | Honors Introduction to Sociology | 3 | **Total Major Units: 18** ### GE Pattern Complete the following: #### Cal-GETC: 34 units Required for transfer degrees (AA-T and AS-T). ### Electives As needed to reach a minimum of 60 degree-applicable units. **Minimum Degree Total: 60 units**
