Beginning with an overview of visual art in Europe in the 19th century, the course is geared towards the examination of philosophies and visual characteristics of modern art in the first half of the 20th century such as Fauvism, Cubism, Futurism, and Surrealism. The investigation will continue with the development of contemporary art after World War II covering art movements such as Abstract Expressionism, Pop Art, Minimalism, and Conceptualism. In the late 20th century, issues of race, gender, identity, and globalization in visual art take the center stage. Students will develop writing, analytical, and critical thinking skills through the analyses of paintings, sculptures, and non-traditional media in art.",
